Spruce Lake was a trip that was filled with beautiful moments.
Before leaving for our trip, the sixth grade worked hard at coming up with a class covenant. We discussed what it meant to form a safe and welcoming sixth grade community. Students each thought about the strengths of our class as a group and the difficulties that seemed to often arise within our group. We concluded that one main goal that we had for this year is to learn to truly listen to and encourage each other.
While at Spruce Lake, the sixth grade encountered many challenges. One that particularly stood out was a three hour session that involved team challenges lead by a teacher named Mr. Eric. The sixth grade truly had to learn to listen to each other! At first, the challenges seemed to be daunting and to move at a slow pace, due to the difficulty that we had with listening to each others ideas. However, as time went on, the challenges were accomplished at an efficient pace, there was a sense of a growing understanding of each other. We were drawn to work together, to listen to everyone's ideas and to appreciate the gifts that each student has to offer to our group.
We will continue to work on thinking about and discussing our class covenant over the next several weeks, and I am looking forward to seeing each sixth grader continue to learn what it means to be part of a safe and strong network of friends.
