The sixth graders have delved into the assignment of writing persuasive essays. At the beginning of this week, we talked about finding topics that we were passionate about. I asked the students, "What itch do you need to scratch"? What is one topic/problem that you are itching to write about?
We came up with several topics ranging from a girls basketball team at Mustard Seed, to fast food consumption, to customer service at the Prudential Center. After studying several published essays and looking at specific evidence that was presented in each persuasive essay, students started to brainstorm how to find strong evidence for their own arguments. Over the past couple of days, students have started creating middle school surveys, researching online and conducting phone interviews.
We are all excited to see where these essays lead us. We are each hoping to mail them to specific people who may be interested in our topics!
